Frozen Ground is the solo debut for local Tasmanian artist, Laura Eves. Laura’s recent work of paintings and photographic support material captures the essential raw beauty of the winter climate in Tasmania.
The works that comprise Frozen Ground were created in freezing conditions, and contain a sense of fragility, with colours that evoke, inspire and intrigue.
Working outside in sub-zero conditions – often in the dark of the early hours of the morning, Laura has pushed the boundaries of her chosen medium.
“Dawn is a particularly special time, as the work takes on its own life just as the sun comes up and shines its first light. There is something beautiful that happens each day and on winter mornings especially, with the crystallisation of air into frost – it forms something magical for such a short moment before melting to become liquid again.”
Laura has spent recent years exploring her art through these fascinating phenomena that occur in nature. The works in Frozen Ground are part of this investigation, created by literally painting on the frozen ground. The art contains its own freedom and spontaneity, it’s exciting, it shows innovation and an open mind and has produced something truly captivating.
Damien Quilliam, the QVMAG’s Curator of Contemporary Art said that: ‘The method that Laura has used in creating her fascinating works displays the artist’s skill and sensitivity. These images literally depict the frost etched into her works in a way that shows how she has developed a technique that is both unique and astonishing’
The exhibition will be opened by Damien Quilliam, Curator of Contemporary Art, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.
